About

During this one-day workshop, students will be introduced to the fundamental technique of throwing off the hump.

Led by our experienced instructor Gabriel Cordero, this hands-on course will allow participants to explore and practice this essential wheel-throwing technique.

A skill deeply rooted in Korean and Japanese ceramic traditions, throwing off the hump allows potters to efficiently produce multiple pieces in a smooth and fluid process, while reducing the time spent on preparation and centering.

The first half of the day will begin with learning progressive centering techniques using two pieces of clay weighing 2.5 kg each. From there, students will work individually on two forms, creating sets of 5 pieces each, chosen from a pre-selected list of traditional Japanese pottery forms.

During the second half of the day, we will double the amount of clay to 10 kg and repeat the same process. This time, students will have the choice of creating either:

4 groups of 5 identical forms,
4 groups of 5 different assortments,
or a combination of both.

During the final 30 minutes before cleanup, we will bring our boards to the table to review the work produced, discuss the results, and select the pieces you would like to have fired.
(Firing and glazing are not included)

Schedule

10:00 – 10:15
Introduction to the technique, workshop objectives, brief discussion of the background and context, explanation of tools, and a complete demonstration.

10:15 – 12:30
Centering 5 kg of clay and producing the first two series of 5 pieces.

12:30 – 13:30
Lunch break.

13:30 – 15:30
Centering and producing the final 4 series.

15:30 – 16:00
Comparison of series and discussion.

16:00 – 16:30
Cleanup.

Materials & Equipment

15 kg of beige stoneware clay per person and all necessary tools will be provided.

Firing is NOT included.

Firing, Glazing & Decoration

Any firing of pieces created during the workshop will be charged at 23CHF/kg, including a transparent glaze.

You may also book an additional session to decorate and glaze your pieces.

Glazing and decoration are skills in themselves and require a dedicated workshop.
